Fiona Joy Hawkins - Angel Above My Piano Review

by Dan Upton

.
I don't have anything against new age or classical music; it's just difficult to describe from a review standpoint. Take, for instance, this disc, Fiona Joy Hawkins' second album. Thirteen tracks (12 songs plus a reprise) of, more or less, solo piano. The opening track "Crystal Desert" opens with the sound of blowing wind, and there are a few spots where a synthesizer is adding accents and a droning background, but for the most part the song is just flowing arpeggios. Then there are the next two tracks, "Dance of the Penguins" and "Flight of the Albatross," both with, you guessed it, more arpeggios and a little bit of synthesizer background. To be fair though, she's not a one-trick pony, as she starts to move into more articulated melodies accompanied by chords in the bass. Her three-part "Opus for Love" also adds synthesized strings to the mix. There's nothing about this disc that particularly stands out, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing, and it's good music for mellowing out or creating a soothing atmosphere.
