DJ Krush - History of DJ Krush Review

by Dan MacIntosh

.
With its music videos, interview segments, and performance pieces, History of DJ Krush tells the unusual story of a groundbreaking musician. After all, DJ Krush is a Japanese musician who has earned big ups from the hip-hop community, a mostly American Black music world.

This is a three-DVD, musician's history set, although it doesn't follow a natural chronological order. If you're looking for chronology, however, just take a gander at the Gig Almanac in the accompanying booklet, as well as the extensive discography. The set is broken into three separate parts: DVD one, titled A-Un, mainly focuses on Krush's early years, Ko-no-Michi moves from the mid-1990s up to the present, while the CLIPS disc is just that, various music videos.

My favorite third of History of DJ Krush is its CLIPS DVD. Although many of his collaborators are not the biggest of the big names in the biz, tracks like "Only the Strong Survive", and especially "Danger of Love" featuring Zap Mama, shine particularly brightly. "Danger of Love" carries with it an ominous tone; one that will stay with you long after the song ends.

The main fault with this project is that it assumes viewers already know the large value of turntablists. Make no mistake: watching DJ Krush at work is a thrill because he's obviously a master at his craft. But a little insight from a few critics – particularly within the hip-hop realm – might have made his performances come to life even more.

History of DJ Krush is not a perfect presentation of what this true musical pioneer is all about. But imperfections aside, it offers an extensive look at DJ Krush's musical life – a life not to be missed by any serious music fan.
