They Might Be Giants - The Else Review

by Sherrill Fulghum

.
The name for this band from Boston was taken from a movie starring George C. Scott. Although They Might Be Giants formed in 1983 founding members John Flinsburgh and John Linnell were childhood mates. This Grammy winning band released their first album in 1986.

They Might Be Giants has always sought creative formats for people to hear their music. It began with Dial-a-Song where fans could call a number and hear the band perform an entire song. With the advent of the digital age They Might Be Giants has created a weekly podcast for children. And when it came time to release their newest album "The Else" the band released the album online in a digital format a month before the release of the physical CD. Their music has also appeared in ad spots, film, and television including music for the Comedy Channel's "The Daily Show" with John Stewart. And if all this was not enough They Might Be Giants is constantly touring all over the world for fans old and new.

The music of They Might Be Giants is considered Alternative by those who decide such things. Their songs are at time non-sensical and other times are more like a one sided conversation that has been set to music. The music itself contains some interesting sounds, instruments, and musical interludes.

The latest album by the band contains 13 songs including a humorous little ditty called "The Mesopotamians" which tells the story of a race by that name. The tale of The Mesopotamians is a tale not unlike that of They Might Be Giants.
