The Great Deceiver - Life is Wasted on the Living Review

by Matt Hensch

.
Who could conjure a better skillet of death metal and atmospheric hardcore with sprinkles of industrial rock on the side than The Great Deceiver? Formed in the late 1990s, The Great Deceiver has proven to be one of the most unique groups in the metal scene, yet that was only the start of it. Seriously, this multi-themed project has grown stronger and stronger over time, and their latest record entitled Life is Wasted on the Living continues the group's crusade of linking different sounds into one solid mixing pot of brutality.

Is there any reason to not expect a killer record with crushing breakdowns, fast riffs, and bizarre samples when The Great Deceiver is present? Heaviness is the sole recipe here; everything is based around hammering guitars with deep, technical percussion underneath it all. Also, the constant application of samples lifts up the record's overall sound due to the colorful addition of the computerized samples. Honestly, there's nothing but fantastic material to be found here.

One thing is definitely for sure when the day ends: Tomas Lindberg is still the best harsh vocalist ever! The ex-At the Gates frontman still has the extreme shriek-laden process that comes out during every waking moment of this CD, and he sounds fantastic doing it. Lindberg's performance is made up of loud and intense shrieks strolling warmly with his custom low growls that he acquired during his days in Grotesque. The overall combination of these two components makes Life is Wasted on the Living one of Lindberg's strongest efforts to date; it is a truly amazing voice this legendary man has.

The Great Deceiver went all out with this recording, and it's certainly one of the best things to come out under their moniker. Everything from the atmosphere to the technicality is definitely at the highest level of quality, but it's Lindberg's overall vocal performance that makes this CD such an enjoyable one. Fans of The Great Deceiver need to have this recording, and I think anyone looking for an interesting listen should certainly look into this abnormal masterpiece.
