The After Effect - The Shape Of Everything Review

by J. Simpson

.
The After Effect is a band of 4 musicians hailing from Brooklyn NY. The band was originally started by Nick Gagliardi (guitar) and Joe Song (acoustic guitar/vocals) in the summer of 2005. After having a temporary drummer and one that didn't seem to fit The After Effects music the band threw out another ad for a new drummer. They were quickly contacted by a gentleman with already 13 years of drumming experience under his belt and soon they hired their new drummer, Jon Puntenney from Cincinnati (that's right Jon from Cincinnati some of you may not see the humor there but that's ok, I'll move on). The group then realized they where in need of a new bassist for basically the same reasons they needed a new drummer and luckily Joe had a friend from college that played base and before you could say "Kid & Tommy break it up" Chris Colmenero was the permanent base player. In June 2006 they released their debut disc titled The Shape Of Everything.

The Shape Of Everything is a diverse eclectic type music with both acoustic and electric guitars throughout. The songs have a jazzy folky funk sound which draws a slight comparison to groups like The Dave Mathews Band or Kings of Leon. The album starts off with an instrumental tune that actually may be one of the best songs out of the 14 tracks on the album. At the first listen to the entire CD the vocals seem kinda out of place or unappealing. The problem is the second and third listen didn't help any. Nothing stuck out or had you humming one of the songs after the disc was done.

Bottom line is I'm not too impressed with The After Effects debut offering. Hopefully they'll do better next time. If they're around long enough for a next time.
