Sign of the Times: The Best of Queensryche Review
by Zane Ewton
.
'80s metal is greatly served by the presence of Queensryche. One of the few bands of that era to remain relevant and not rely on caricature to pay the bills. That is a refreshing concept in a time when past stars troll out their hair weaves and reality shows. Queensryche started out with the galloping rhythms and howling vocals akin to that which was brought to our shores by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. The derivative sounds of "Queen of the Reich" altered over the years to a bigger, hard rock sound. Singer Geoff Tate's dramatic vocals soared over massive rock riffs and big hit power ballads. The band hit on critical acclaim and consumer satisfaction with the operatic Operation: Mindcrime before cranking out a string of hit singles. "Silent Lucidity", "Jet City Woman" and "Another Rainy Night" to name a few. Sign of the Times: The Best of Queensryche is perfect for anyone who wants to stick with the basics. The record covers the band's career efficiently, providing a quaint introduction. Introduce the band to someone new is all these records are intended to do, and this one does it just fine.
