AFI Release First Song From Forthcoming Album
. The new song comes nearly four years after their last effort, 2009's Crash Love. Frontman Davey Havok provides emotional lyrics over an unconventionally punchy drum rhythm, while big guitars and deep bass fill out the chorus. Havok dedicates his vocals to an ex-lover, singing, "I faced destruction and you just killed me and walked away/I gave my heart to the cruel now it will not beat again/I hope you do/I hope you suffer/I hope you do/Just like I suffered." Screaming vocals and abstract layers of synths give a harder dynamic to the track, which is a far cry from Crash Love's pop-rock attitude. "I Hope You Suffer" is a dark love ballad, echoing the albums of AFI past like 2003′s Sing the Sorrow and 2006′s Decemberunderground, which initially thrust the group into the spotlight with singles like "Girl's Not Grey" and "Miss Murder." Drummer Adam Carson delivers a beat more Nine Inch Nails than Fall Out Boy, while guitarist Jade Puget's chords race through the four-and-a-half minute song with '80s metal influence.
