De La Soul Have a Connection to the 2013 Heisman Trophy
. While Mason's performance on the field is how he's made his name in the relentlessly competitive world of collegiate sports, the powerful young running back is also something of hip-hop royalty, being the son of Vincent Mason, better known as Maseo, DJ, rapper and one-third of legendary rap innovators, De La Soul, best known for hit singles like "Me Myself & I" and "Stakes is High." "I try not to get into my dad's shine," the younger Mason said in an interview with the Ledger-Enquirer (via The Big Lead) back in 2011 when he was just a freshman hoping to make the team. "I try to make a scene for myself. I congratulate him on everything he's accomplished in his life. I try to do the same for mine." While a proud father is happy to see his son play the game, the admittedly sports-deficient DJ is much more concerned with the education Auburn has to offer and what opportunities Tre will have after the glory days on the gridiron are behind him. "You could have said Apple University [before Tre was recruited] and it wouldn't have mattered to me. I don't even follow football like that," Maseo told Auburn's War Eagle Reader. "My brother is the football specialist, I'm music. I'm being perfectly honest with you, all I care about is the scholarship opportunity being presented for [Tre] to play ball at whatever school he chooses. What mattered to me as a parent was, if he happens to get hurt, will be he able to fulfill his education. Will the scholarship go away if his career playing football goes away? I think about life after football." more on this story Radio.com is an official news provider for antiMusic.com.
