Today Derelict vocalist Eric Burnet and guitarist Max Lussier tell us about the song "Yours To Surpass" from their new album "Perpetuation". Here is the story:Max:Yours to Surpass will always hold a special place for me because it's the first song I ever wrote for Derelict. Musically I tried to write the song as singular stream of consciousness, with very little repetition and a non-traditional structure. I actually had to write out the music and then learn it, as there were some parts I could not originally play like the very technical middle section. Although it's the shortest song on the record, I find it's quite action-packed and fairly complex.
Eric: When Max brought the YTS music to the table, I knew the lyrics would have to be bold and strong to match the energetic statement he had put together. I ended up writing about my belief that notions of fate and destiny are traps that keep people stuck in bad situations. The lyrics really encourage people to take command of their own lives, to make drastic changes in order to pursue happiness, and to always avoid slavery, be it to a person, institution, philosophy or pre-conceived notion. "Your fate is yours to surpass!"
Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself here and learn more about the album right here!
