I wrote, "As it turns out", sitting at my dining room table while my daughters ate lunch. The economy was in bad shape, we were fighting two wars that it seemed nobody believed in, and I was feeling like I didn't recognize my own country anymore. Almost like a friend you see slip into alcoholism or drugs, and they lose themselves, and you no longer "know" them. That's how I felt about this country. We used to be the barometer of justice. Now it just feels like we're drunk on greed. I was sitting at that table overwhelmed by the feeling that we, as a country, are going down, and that feeling is what "as it turns out" is all about.
