The Marva Whitney Facebook page announced that the acclaimed funk singer died on Saturday. She was 68.Whitney, who had earned the nickname "Soul Sister #1," was known for her solo hits as well as touring and collaborating with James Brown.
The here account posted an update that reads, "She left us with a legacy that will shine forever."
Whitney's biggest hit came in 1969 with her version of "It's My Thing." which landed in the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Her song "Unwind Yourself" has been sampled in songs by The 45 Kings, DJ Kool and Mac Miller and more.
The cause of her death has not been officially confirmed as of Monday, but reports indicate that she died from complications from pneumonia.
