(Gibson) The British pop artist Richard Hamilton died yesterday. He was 89. Hamilton was a groundbreaking '60s artist who designed the cover for The Beatles eponymous 1968 album, better known as "The White Album."According to the Daily Mail, Hamilton's work inspired the likes of Andy Warhol and Joseph Beuys. Richard Hamilton's best known, Swingeing London painting, depicted Rolling Stone Mick Jagger in the back of a police car.
Hamilton is also credited with coining the phrase 'pop art' itself. He wrote in 1957, "Pop art is popular (designed for a mass audience), transient (short term solution), expendable (easily forgotten), low cost, mass produced, young (aimed at youth), witty, sexy, gimmicky, glamorous, big business." more on this story
