Today Steve Mahoney from Mahoney & The Moment tells us about "Roadtrip" from their brand new debut album. Here is the story: 'Roadtrip' was written whilst I was still living in my native England and had a kind of fascination with travelling in America. I was listening to a lot of Gillian Welch and Ryan Adams at the time, simple and honest country tinged songs about love, I'd also just met a new girlfriend. When you are so inspired by great music and romance sometimes the song just comes out of nowhere!
For my generation in England, it's a desire and a goal to be travelling the world, and seeing it is regarded as a must, for me I was always most interested in seeing America. The song is also a sort of idealist view of the country and tradition, from a modern city perspective.
I used the metaphor of the road and travelling for love, as those were the things happening in my life at the time and the parts of life that have always most inspired me.
The song carries the kind of optimism and hope you have at the start of a relationship, and hope to carry throughout it.
I've played the song to audiences all around the world, but it wasn't until I performed it with Emily and as a band that it made complete sense to me!
Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
