Lyle Lovett was in Austin on Friday where he was named the official Texas State Musician for 2011. The Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter received a proclamation at the State Capitol where resolution HCR165 was adopted in the House and Senate chambers.
Representative Ryan Guillen authored the resolution and State Senator Dan Patrick, from District 7, recognized Lovett for his exceptional contributions to the state's musical legacy.
"It is a tremendous honor to be recognized by the state of Texas, and to be included in the company of such accomplished artists," said Lovett immediately following the ceremony.
The Texas Commission on the Arts honored Lovett for his long-standing commitment to the arts in Texas. The other 2011 Texas State Artist appointees are Poet Laureate, David M. Parsons, 2D Artist Melissa Miller and 3D Artist Jesus Moroles. The 2012 appointees are Texas State Musician Billy Gibbons, Poet Laureate Jan Seale, 2D Artist Karl Umlauf and 3D Artist Bill FitzGibbons.
Next week, Lovett returns to the road for a 24-city concert tour with longtime friend John Hiatt that continues to support his most recent album, Natural Forces. Lovett also recently stepped in front of the camera to play a role in When Angels Sing, a holiday picture with Harry Connick, Jr., which was filmed in Austin.
