(Gibson) Mick Wall has known the members of Metallica since 1984, when he was writing for the English magazine, Kerrang!, and the group were making their debut at the Donington festival. The journalist would get to know them better the following year, hanging out with James Hetfield and company in Copenhagen during the recording of Master of Puppets. It is a relationship Wall has maintained for over 25 years, which makes Wall's latest book, Enter Night: A Biography of Metallica, so intriguing."The whole thing surprised me," Wall told AOL Noisecreep. "It was the same with my last book on Led Zeppelin [2010's When Giants Walked the Earth]. I went into writing Enter Night thinking I already knew a great deal about Metallica. Two years of writing and research and just sitting there really thinking about things made me realize I knew nothing." Despite his pull-no-punches approach, Wall said he has a new appreciation for the band. "The whole thing was a huge journey for me. I guess the overriding impression I was left with was of a band of ultimate survivors, real rock 'n' roll frontiersmen who did what it took to make it and stay there, come what may.
