Legendary Detroit guitarist and member of Motown's original Funk Brothers backing band, Dennis Coffey, is being honored with a Distinguished Achievement Award at this year's Detroit Music Awards on April 16th.He will play a live set at the event, including a collaboration with one of Michigan's new soul generation, Mayer Hawthorne (who adds guest vocals to the track "All Your Goodies Are Gone" on the new album).
Coffey is also nominated in the Outstanding Video (Independent Budget) category for the video for his instrumental cover of Cee-Lo Green's "F**k You."
The awards will take place at the Fillmore Theatre in Detroit and will celebrate their 20th Anniversary this year. All award-winners are determined by local musicians and music industry professionals.
It is the only awards ceremony nationally presented by a not-for-profit organization, the Motor City Music Foundation. Proceeds from the show and DMA's emerging artist showcases are used to present educational events and provide resources to local musicians. Previous DMA events have featured appearances by some of Detroit's greatest music legends including Was (Not Was), Eminem with D12, The Clark Sisters, Martha Reeves, Smokey Robinson, Bob Seger, Grand Funk Railroad and George Clinton.
The DMA performance will be one day before Record Store Day, which will see the release of an exclusive 7" vinyl single featuring an exclusive track and a brand new remix by producer legend, Steinski.
Dennis will be celebrating Record Store Day in Detroit at UHF (512 S Washington Ave, Royal Oak 48067) with a live performance beginning at 3:00 PM.
Dennis new album, Dennis Coffey, will be released on April 26th.
