Doggy Style Return With First New Album in 20 Years

07/28/2011
.
We received word that 80s skate punks Doggy Style are back with their first new album in twenty years.

Called, Punker's Anthem, the album is set to be released August 30 via Cleopatra Records. Here is what their peeps sent over:

In the 1980s, Orange County became known for a brand of punk rock particularly popular in the skate community. Skate punk was colorful in look and lyric, taking itself a little less seriously than other types of punk. At the forefront was a group of high schoolers calling themselves Doggy Style, who wrote hardcore slice-of-life songs and played them really fast. They released three EPs; most notably SIDE BY SIDE on Flipside Records which included the still-popular "Donut Shop Rock." Then there was a break-up, several reformations, name changes, style shifting and then sporadic quiet.

But the punk spirit never dies, and Doggy Style has revived with original members Ed Caudill (lead Guitar), Tim Fyke (singer) and Mark Tolbert (guitar/ vocals). Filling out the band are Danny Staggs (Guitar), Eric Vedder (bass) and Joey Ruffino (drums), each of whom were a part of the '80s OC music scene in bands like China White, AWOL and Dawn Patrol. Special guest artists on Punker's Anthem are Jack Grisham (TSOL) and Gordon Cox (The Detours).

Today's Doggy Style sound, "hardcore revival," says the band, is "a blend of what's great about the new punk rock resurgence with the youthful energy and innocence of being a suburban punk in the early '80s. We wanted to take what we've learned as musicians and blend it with attitude of being a kid, skating the storm drains and leaving flaming bags of sh*t on the neighbor's porch."

Of the sixteen songs on Punker's Anthem, some are remakes of Doggy Style classics (like "Donut Shop Rock" and "Ladies from Neptune"); others are unreleased songs from back in the day ("City Life," "Suicidal Maniac" and "AWOL"). After a demo was leaked and found popularity on underground radio stations across the country, "Beat Your Meat" was rerecorded in full sound. Other highlights, according to the Dogs: "World-changing or the sh*t that pisses your parents off songs are "Punker Girl," a melodic quirky quasi ballad, good enough for the air play but with just enough well timed f-bombs to keep it off the radio, and "In the Pit" is Doggy Style attempt at a love song, but sounds more like Buster Poindexter meats David Johansen."
