Today Mathias Strφmberg from indie pop band The Bell tells us about "Whatever Did You Say?" from their brand new album "Great Heat". Here is the story: This is one of the songs where we have to ask ourselves "can it really be this simple?" because the basic structure, riff-, melody- and otherwise is so self confident, so as-a-matter-a-fact it almost cannot be avoided.
We used our basic (digital) base and drum machine set up and the song was
there in an instant. The lyrics started out with the whole whatever-did-you-say lyrical thing just repeated over and over and it laid the groundwork for quite a simplistic song.
After that we embroided it, putting that Blue Monday-esque baseline in there and Mathias worked out the lyrics and found/invented some sort of deeper meaning. It's total craftmanship, it really is.
We love to work on our tracks and compositions as little pop projects rather than bleeding them out in some sort of rock'n'roll session. This is a typical product of that track of thought. In fact, it's almost mathematics.
