Kenny Chambers, the frontman for 80s Boston rock band Moving Targets, has released his new album, Under the Tracks. The 15-song album, just released on Bad Blood Records, is the first recording by Chambers in more than a decade. This is a limited release and will be available for purchase for one year only.
Under the Tracks is a natural progression from Chambers' previous solo work (Double Negative, No Reaction, and the instrumental Sin Cigaros). "I wanted to offer something musically diverse without seeming to be overly ambitious," Chambers says. "These are melodic songs with hopefully enough rough edges to connect with anyone familiar with what I do."
"Aside from playing in the punk band American Pulverizer on and off for 10 years, I lost interest in doing anything of a serious nature musically," said Chambers of his hiatus from the music business. "I kept writing songs and recording them at home, eventually amassing quite a stash (over 200) of songs, jumping from one genre to the next. I was doing it for my own enjoyment. Hardly a soul heard them besides myself and a few friends."
Chambers' return to recording was partly inspired by the untimely deaths in the past few years of former Moving Targets band mates Pat Leonard (bass) and Pat Brady (drums), as well as his move back to the Boston area from Hollywood. Music helped Chambers cope with some tough times these past few years. "These songs have been too kind to me to keep them locked up," he explains.
Under the Tracks is truly a D.I.Y. effort for Chambers, who produced the record himself and plays all instruments on it. "I bought a Zoom 12 track recorder and a $50 microphone and started recording in my bedroom in the spring of this year," said Chambers. "Once I had about 50 tunes recorded, I narrowed it down to 15 and decided to put them out on my own just to get my feet wet again."
In addition to his solo work, Chambers also plays gigs around the Boston area with Stone Strangers, his roots rock band that features Bob Metzger of Leonard Cohen's band.
