Lupe Fiasco Takes on Joy Division

(Gibson) Rapper Lupe Fiasco has a new band, and he says they are a tribute to rock legends Joy Division. Taking a page out of pal Kanye West's playbook, Fiasco has chosen to sing (not rap) with the post-punk group, named Japanese Cartoon. However, the Chicago MC takes it one step further, using a fake British accent on the band's debut album."The true inspiration for Japanese Cartoon is the band Joy Division," Fiasco told Complex.com. "You ever watch footage of Joy Division singing? Ian Curtis is like a straight nerd. And he [doesn't look] like the rock and roll type. But when he got on stage, he became a completely different animal, like he was having a seizure on stage." Japanese Cartoon's album, In the Jaws of the Lords of Death, is available as a free download on AllSabotage.com. There's no word yet if the band's next album will be a tribute to New Order. -
