(Gibson) Duane Allman, the musical genius of the Allman Brothers Band, died on Friday, October 29, 1971, in Macon, Georgia, from massive injuries received in a motorcycle crash. He was just 24 years old.The band were riding high, maybe not at their peak yet, but pretty close. In March 1971, the band recorded At Fillmore East in New York City. They then continued to tour the U.S. through late October, when they returned to Georgia for a well-deserved rest. Taking some time of from a hectic recording and touring schedule, Duane Allman was enjoying the break. Cruising on his motorcycle in the early evening, Allman, at the intersection of Hillcrest and Bartlett in Macon, swerved to avoid a large flatbed truck that turned in front of him. His motorcycle spun out of control, skidded and pinned Allman underneath as it slid over 50 feet more. Still alive when the ambulance came, Allman had to be resuscitated three times on the way to hospital before dying after emergency surgery at Macon Medical Center. - more on this story
