Red Hot Chili Peppers Going Afro Pop

(Gibson) The Red Hot Chili Peppers are experimenting with African sounds on their new album, according to drummer Chad Smith. He told Spin.com that the new style was partially inspired by a trip that bassist Flea and new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer (formerly the band's touring guitar player) took to Lagos, Nigeria and Ethiopia."That music just moves to a different groove, it's not your typical Western four-four. The rhythms are so infectious," Smith said. "We're not trying to cop that thing but we're just doing our take on it. Hopefully we'll come up with something new." Smith said Flea also has been writing a lot of tunes for the new album, often composing on piano. "That's a different thing. There's quite a wide variety," Smith said. - more on this story
