(Gibson) Jazz saxophonist Marion Brown died Monday in an assisted living community in Hollywood, Florida, according to multiple sources. He was 79 (although some are debating his actual birthdate).An alto sax player, Brown is best-known for his avant-garde work in the New York jazz scene during the '60s. He worked with such greats as John Coltrane, Archie Shepp, Sun Ra and John Tchicai. He also played on Coltrane's legendary 1965 album, Ascension. In the '70s, Brown split his time between jazz and teaching. He became an assistant professor of music at Bowdoin College in Maine, and also served on the faculty of Brandeis University, Colby College and Amherst College. In 1976, he earned his Master's degree in ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University. - more on this story
