'The Man Who Shot the 70s Mick Rock Exhibit Set For The Morrison Hotel Gallery

10/19/2010
.
(PR) The Morrison Hotel Gallery at 313 Bowery is thrilled to present a retrospective of people and legends in music history from renowned photographer Mick Rock on October 26.

Celebrated as 'The Man Who Shot the 70s', Mick Rock's legendary images encapsulate the revolutionary spirit of several eras of rock n' roll and he continues the journey today. Rock launched his career in 1972 with his portrait of an unknown David Bowie and continued to document the rise and descent of Ziggy Stardust. His career continued to soar with key 70s images like Lou Reed's Transformer, Iggy Pop's Raw Power, Queen's Queen II and many of the Sex Pistols' infamous shots, capturing the most fascinating and exciting characters in rock music in sexy and gritty imagery. He became one of the most sought-after photographers in the world and captured the groundbreaking New York City underground music scene pioneered by bands like The Ramones, Talking Heads and Blondie. Mick has become a legend himself, shooting the who's who of rock, punk, and pop icons right as they become part of the pop scene.

This outstanding exhibition at The Morrison Hotel Gallery coincides with the publication of Rock's new book, Exposed: the Faces of Rock n' Roll, which includes 200 previously unseen and unpublished images, as well as rare and unexpected portraits across nearly 40 years, including unforgettable images of Syd Barrett, Lou Reed, Blondie, Queen, Iggy Pop, the Sex Pistols, Andy Warhol, Rocky Horror, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Killers, Lady Gaga, Bono, Snoop Dogg, Alicia Keys and many more. Exposed is a stunning visual celebration for music fans.

On his career as a photographer, Mick says, "London in the late sixties and early seventies was a hotbed of creative interchange. The prevalent hippie philosophy united all manner of artists, musicians, film makers, models, designers, actors, writers, and photographers into a unique and fertile community. My timing was excellent. Curiosity and circumstance drew me into the flame of rock n' roll."

Peter Blachley, co-owner of the Morrison Hotel Gallery says, "Mick Rock is one of the great showmen of music photography. If he wasn't such a great photographer, he could easily be one of his subjects." The Morrison Hotel Gallery was founded in 2001 by Peter Blachley, a former record company executive, producer Rich Horowitz, a former independent record store owner, and Henry Diltz, a legendary music photographer. The gallery has since grown to become a major brand in fine art music photography and is respected amongst peers and artists alike.
