(Gibson) Buddy Morrow, who shared the stage with everyone from Tommy Dorsey to Johnny Carson, passed away last week at the age of 91. As a trombonist and bandleader, Morrow was at the top of the swing world for over seven decades.Morrow hit the big time in the late '30s, when he joined the Artie Shaw Orchestra. A few years later, he joined the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, and later joined Jimmy Dorsey's band, as well. In 1950, he formed his own orchestra, scoring hits with "Rose, Rose, I Love You," "Night Train," "One Mint Julep" and "Hey Mrs. Jones." In the '60s and '70s, Morrow did mostly session work, performing regularly on The Tonight Show. In 1977, Morrow took over the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, which had continued on after the legendary bandleader's death. Morrow held that post until the day he passed away. He appeared onstage with the band just three days before his death in Ormond Beach, Florida, playing his hit song, "Night Train." Morrow is survived by his wife Carole, two daughters, a son and three grandchildren. -
