Patti Smith Memoir Wins National Book Award

(Gibson) Patti Smith has received the U.S. National Book Award for non-fiction for her memoir, Just Kids.The book recounts her life growing up in New York in the '60s. According to Bloomberg.com, she said, "When I was a clerk at Scribner's bookstore, I always dreamed of writing a book of my own. When I had to unpack the winners of the National Book Awards and put them on the shelf, I used to wonder what it would feel like to win one." Smith received a $10,000 prize and spoke in defense of books at a time of new technology threatening the book industry. She said, "There is nothing more beautiful than the book, the paper, the font, the cloth." - more on this story
