Today Kate Miller-Heidke tells us about "Caught in the Crowd" from her album "Curioser" which has already gone platinum in Australia and she's looking to make her mark state-side. Here is the story: "Caught in the Crowd" started with a simple, cycling, four chord guitar part that we (my collaborator/husband Keir Nuttall) had floating about for a while. At the time we were listening a lot to the Public Enemy song "He Got Game", which is a wistful and inspiring piece of hip hop. We realised that if we played around with cramming lots of syllables into each verse like a hip-hop tune, we could put a lot more detail into what is essentially a folk/pop song.
I've always like songs with stories, and "Caught In the Crowd" tells the story not of being bullied, or being a bully, but of being a bystander. People often ask me if the character of James is a real person and if the events in the song really happened. Well, all the things in the story are true, but they are more combinations of people both Keir and I went to school with, amalgamated into one character. I think we all did things in school we're not too proud of.
Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album, plus grab dates including a big show this Thursday in Washington D.C. at the 9:30 Club - right here!
