Legendary metal band Atheist are back with, "Jupiter," their first album in 17 years. To celebrate this week's album release we asked frontman Kelly Shaefer to pick some of his favorite tracks from the album and tell us a little about them. Here is Kelly with today's song: "Second to Sun"- The opening sequence in this tune and the riff that follows were written pretty much first on this new album. And they were a bit of an indicator to myself and Steve Flynn of things to come. There was a familiarity, as well as freshness to the riffing and drumming in this tune.
One of the most exciting and explosive moments we have ever had a s a band in my opinion is the break in the middle, it's a collective of a strong lyric "And belief split to 4 like a cross on the floor it split front, from back, and side, from side like a cross, they called it God, I say the Sun" coupled with a brutally building guitar part and a reverse drum roll that brings everything into a complete hammer to head aural experience in that moment.
Lyrically it is symbolic in some sense of the new style of writing and placing my vocals. This time around I was able to do things knowing I did not have to sing and play it at the same time, and that did lead to me trying to place things a bit differently.
Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album - right here!
