Momentum continues to build behind April Smith and the Great Picture Show's new album, SONGS FOR A SINKING SHIP. The self-released, fan-funded album has earned high praise, with Paste magazine saying, "April Smith is quite the burlesque bad girl.... packing a sound full of sassy hooks and swinging rhythms." Entertainment Weekly's "Music Mix" blog noted her "intriguingly skewed lyrical sensibility," and the New York Post's PopWrap blog declared, "Adorable, quirky and the owner of a voice that could cure depression, April makes the world a better place. Period." NPR Music chose first single "Colors" as their "Song of the Day" on February 26, proclaiming, "April Smith was born to be an entertainer... She radiates sunny energy and stage-ready sauciness." And weekly paper The Aquarian, in Smith's native New Jersey, called the album "vintage melodramatic pop.... a combination of a little jazz, a little ragtime and a whole lotta awesome."
Smith's song "Terrible Things," from "Songs For A Sinking Ship," is currently featured in promo spots for the sixth season of the Showtime TV series "Weeds."
April Smith and the Great Picture Show recently taped an episode of the NPR-syndicated "Mountain Stage" in Morgantown, West Virginia, alongside Jakob Dylan & Neko Case and The Watson Twins; that performance will air nationwide beginning June 11.
