This year March 24 - 27 marks the tenth anniversary of Durham College's Riot Radio Presents: Reel Music Festival(formerly known as Rock N' Reel Music and Film Festival). This student-run, weekend long event features a trade show, musical showcases, seminars, film competition, music clinics, as well as a songwriter's competition. All components of this event are orchestrated by Durham College's Music Business Management students and will be happening on the Durham College and UOIT campuses as well as throughout the city of Oshawa.
Musical acts confirmed for this year this year include rock quartet Young Rival, Toronto rapper Luu Breeze, and metalcore band Ion Dissonance. Five showcases – hip hop, rock, metal, acoustic, and electro – will be happening in venues across Oshawa during March 26 and 27.
During the day Durham College will be the host to various music-related seminars and conferences featuring such topics as Females in the Industry, Artist Management, and the annual Demo Derby music critique. The entire weekend kicks off with the Prescription 2 Rock music clinics on the evening of March 24 with the evening of March 25 featuring the annual songwriter's competition, Song's Revealed.
Not only is it the festival's tenth anniversary, but this is also the first year for the re-named event – Riot Radio Presents: Reel Music Festival. The unveiling of the new name and logo design occurred in November 2009 after months of deliberation. Durham College students competed for the chance to rebrand the festival with the final name and design being selected by the administration.
