Pigeons made the news last weekend after the onstage assault on Kings of Leon but today we give you another music story that feature the winged beasts. The Hundred in the Hands have premiered their new music video for the track, "Pigeons," the next single from their forthcoming debut album. Watch the video, directed by Daniels (Warp Films), here:
The single will be released September 14 digitally and on 12", backed with remixes by Blawan and Walls. The Hundred in the Hands' self-titled debut album follows a week later. Talking about the subject of the song and video, The Hundred in the Hands' Jason Friedman says of the protagonist: "She's drifting between weekends with her friends in the city center. There's dirty pigeons wandering around. In the city, even the birds are filthy. She sneaks out the house. She's got a crush and they hook-up but she's doing it more out of boredom and he's doing it because he's a teenage boy. It's like a looped narrative, every weekend, the same thing. She makes mistakes, possibly very, very bad mistakes but she's always in control. She's smarter than most of the people she meets. Up on the roof she looks at the city and the pigeons flying in circles above and wonders why don't they just fly away?"
The Hundred in the Hands (September 21, Warp Records) LP is an album of deceptively complex pop songs which hark back to the dance music of NYC's storied underground. Where their recent This Desert EP feels like a summertime pop dream, THITH's forthcoming album conjures the spirit of downtown's mutant disco scene as made legendary by clubs like the Paradise Garage. It's a product of DIY home-recording plus a series of studio sessions in London and New York with contributions by producer friends including Jacques Renault, Richard X, Eric Broucek and Chris Zane.
In the meantime, the band continue their two month run in the UK and Europe – playing Big Chill and Green Man festivals as well as London shows supporting Dum Dum Girls and Jimmy Edgar. So far this summer they've already played Wireless, Latitude, Tramlines and a spate of U.K. dates and recently released a remix of "Pigeons" by Foals.
