Blues Star Phillip Walker Dies

(Gibson) Blues guitarist and singer, Phillip Walker, has died at the age of 73. In addition to his own notable solo work, Walker backed legendary performers such as Etta James, Lowell Fulson and Little Richard. He also toured with zydeco giant Clifton Chenier.Walker grew up on the Texas Gulf Coast, learning from such giants as Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Lightnin' Hopkins and Lonnie "Guitar Junior" Brooks. He was hired by Chenier in 1953, and played for the zydeco king for nearly four years. He moved to Los Angeles in 1959 and had a hit song with "Hello My Darling." Walker died of heart failure on Thursday in Palm Springs, according to Alligator Records publicity director Marc Lipkin. - More music news at Gibson.com
