In order to beat the World Record for non-stop movie watching, you're going to have to stay up for 123 hours and watch at least 57 films. Guinness Records lets you have a ten-minute break after every film but if you look away or even have a long blink, you're out (and no, you can't do drugs). A Million In The Morning, a Decon and Street Carnage Films presentation is a documentary about not sleeping. Following 8 contestants as they compete to beat the Movie Watching World Record, the Decon film crew and our host Gavin McInnes decided to stay up with them and capture every moment. What unfolds is a hallucination-inducing, never-ending Ground Hog's Day set with the backdrop of New York City's most iconic landmark – Time's Square.
Known for their ties to the music scene via their independent music label, Decon has commissioned Jay Electronica to produce the film's theme song, aptly titled "A Million In The Morning".
Gavin McInnes, whose work as a comedian, punk singer, radio DJ, cartoonist, director, photographer and even a professional boxer has earned him the title of "One of hipsterdom's primary architects," guides our psychedelic journey. A founding father of Vice Magazine and StreetCarnage.com, Gavin's humorous and short web-based videos range in subject matter, from awkward celebrity interviews about sex, to teaching viewers how to defend themselves against a knife attack by a three-year-old. When he found out about the competition, and the chance to experience sleep deprivation first-hand on film, he was game.
"When I first got invited to document this world championship, I jumped at the chance. I always wondered about the kind of person that could push themselves like that and I thought it would be fun to come as close as I could to matching them hour for hour…I remember hearing the Scottish band, The Jesus and Mary Chain say that not sleeping was their favorite drug. I'd wanted to try it – I mean, really try the s*** out of it ever since," Gavin says.
Directed and edited by Decon's Jason Goldwatch, A Million In The Morning features music from The Death Set, RJD2, Jay Electronica, El-P, DJ Honda, Bionik, & Wax Tailor. "Staying awake for 5 days is like watching a violent car accident on mushrooms," says Goldwatch, whose directorial credits include projects with the likes of Busta Rhymes, Jay Electronica, Pharrell, Kanye West & 88-Keys, Dilated Peoples among others. "You try to look away, but you don't have eyeballs anymore..."
