Singled Out: Post Death Soundtrack

02/24/2010
.
Welcome to Singled Out! where we ask artists to tell us the inside story of their latest single. Today the members of Post Death Soundtrack tell us about their brand new song "Our Time Is Now" from their forthcoming album (but you can download this song for free right now!). We now turn it over to the band for the story:

Kenneth Buck: For me OTIN represents a new beginning for the band. There was a rough batch shortly after Music as Weaponry was released. We had just begun work on our new album when circumstance intervened and we left unsure as to whether it would ever see completion. One day, after a few months of down time, Steve and I met up in a coffee shop to discuss the state of both our our friendship and the project. I was nervous to see whether or not the meeting would be fruitful. Fortunately, we managed to work out a lot of the kinks, and became reinvigorated about the project. We were ready to begin work again with a new approach, and OTIN was the first new track to surface. As Jon said, this is the first track to feature all four members of PDS, and I think it captures the new spirit of the band very well. Since it's creation the band has been stronger than ever, and we are excited for the future.

Jon Ireson: Ken and Steve had layed down the basic structure for the tune back in Calgary so when it came to me in Vancouver, I could already see pretty clearly where the tune was heading. I immediately dug the juxtaposition of the calm resolve with the intrusive maniacal rants. So we set out to exaggerate the extremes, layering in multiple vocal lines and effects during the rants while shooting in some bell-like bass texture for the serene sections. The whole thing was tied together with Colin tracking the grand piano which made this song the first official record that all four members had been a part of.

This song is layin down track so the locomotive can come barrelling through. Ya gotta put yourself in the driver's seat and say: "This is my f***ing ride and I'm going to plow through whatever is in my way". Shed all the confines that have been imposed on you and live for yourself. "Tear up the script and let the bastards sort it out"

Steve Moore: "Our Time Is Now" was the first song written by the current version of Post Death Soundtrack as a 4-piece collective. I think it's suitable for a strong beginning because of some of the "carpe diem" themes covered in the song. It will be included on the upcoming Post Death Soundtrack full length coming in 2010. "Our Time Is Now" is about the balance between detachment and participation in the world, both with the physical and metaphysical; letting all your petty questions leave you - at that point all that's left to do is invoke and demand, to reclaim your own power. I personally have strived to rid myself of all the questions that have plagued me in my life, and take control. When you're invoking power, you have no questions. The rant at the end of the track was a free form stream of consciousness, a forceful play with our own ideas of reality. Play is important! I think the song ended up having a motivational feel and the message is intact.

OTIN was recorded in 3 Studios; two home studios manned by Kenneth Buck and Jon Ireson, and the Vancouver studio Nimbus (Rage Against the Machine, Gallows, Mudvayne), where Colin Everall added some piano and production. It's great to be part of a band where everyone contributes, and everyone respects the ideas of others involved.

Colin Everall - "Our Time is Now" was definitely a reinvigoration of the band, as geographic and interpersonal distancing had questioned the future of the project. The lyric and tone of the track re-energized our morale and creativity, and was an appropriate milestone for the next chapter of Post Death Soundtrack.

We steered clear of live drums for the track, as we all felt sequenced drums much better fit the tone of the track. Jon, Steve & Kenny had laid the lionshare of instrumentation & vocals; all that left was my contribution. Sneaking into a local studio, we quickly guerrilla recorded the piano lines in a dark live room, using an off-limits grand piano."

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, you can download it for free along with other cool tracks - right here!
