Welcome to Singled Out! where we ask artists to tell us the inside story of their latest single. Today Jason McMaster from Broken Teeth tells us about "Break The Spell" from their brand new album "Viva La Rock, Fantastico". We now turn it over to Jason for the story:We were in a hotel room between shows, I think it was Tucson, AZ. I had been writing on the road in the back of buses and vans all year. We were rounding out material, making sure we had killer grooves, trying different keys, and checking out how many "heaters," or fast songs we had, as opposed to how many slow songs we had, whatever. The important thing is that we wanted to try something slightly different. We had always been missing the cool sorta "Hell's Bells," or "For Those About To Rock" vibe. David had a guitar riff, we were slowing it down and dragging the chords without totally ripping off the "Hell's Bells" thing. Had the beats, had the riffs, the arrangement came a little later but the song almost wrote itself. The lyrics were written the day after in the back of a van rolling down the highway. I demoed the vocal while we were doing about 80 mph.
The song ended up being about the control you might be under without being aware of it, or putting blinders on so you don't care you're being controlled. But the pictures painted lyrically still have to feel like old school rock n' roll, no one wants it to be too serious when you're doing this kinda bluesy firey type of rock. I think it's a stand out track (a single?), it seems to be quite a few people's fav song on the new record.
Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album - right here!
