Today Paul Avion tells us about the title track to his from brand new album "R U With Me," which hits stores next week. Here is the story: R U With Me was written shortly after returning from the African slums, where I was living and reporting for SPIN Earth.
The song "R U With Me" is actually a prayer, and most of these songs came directly from dreams, sung into a voice memo recorder I keep by my bed. (I've been "writing" songs that way for a number of years, probably just because I'm a light sleeper and have musical dreams.) "Henry Sage" was the dream-song that triggered the idea for a new album. I thought, "Hey, I really like this one," and so started working on a demo in Garageband. I was listening to the White Album a lot during this period so wanted a Beatles-y/George Martin orchestral approach, mixed with a hippy hand-clappy sound.
I liked what I heard in my demo, but quickly realized Garageband wasn't professional enough, so I used some money I'd been saving for the past few years to upgrade my system. It was actually pretty cheap; the software has come a long way. But it enabled me to record everything myself, at home, for the first time, which have me total creative freedom.
R U With Me will be my first nationally released album, something I've been saving and planning for many years, struggling here in LA, so I hope some people like it. It'll be on iTunes, Amazon and a few other places on Dec. 7, 2010.
