The Like are set to release their sophomore album Release Me (produced by Mark Ronson, Alex Greenwald, and the soul and studio sophistication of the Dap-Kings' Tommy Brenneck, Homer Steinweiss, and Victor Axelrod)
on June 15th (Downtown Records).
The album came to life at Dunham Studios in Brooklyn. The girls stepped into another time – recorded only on analog equipment, used gear from the sixties, and let go.
"What Mark did systematically was take the songs right back to their original form. We spent almost 48 hours straight with Mark arranging the songs properly before we went into the studio, and then we recorded them live," says front woman Z Berg. Drummer Tennessee Thomas adds, "Before Mark, we recorded everything nitpicky and perfect, track by track. But on those great 60's records, the mistakes were some of the best parts of it. Mark shouted at us – it was chaos a lot of the time – but it absolutely brought us together as a band. We recorded for six days with Mark – and we got nine songs. Then we did four days with Alex Greenwald and the Dap-Kings. It was miraculous."
The Echo (Los Angeles) will host the band throughout a May residency, starting the 10th and ending the 31st. During this time The Like will share the stage with fellow Los Angeles bands such as The Young Veins, New Fidelity, Dante Vs Zombies, and Jail Weddings.
