Andrew WK and Beastie Boy on Tap for School Jam

04/28/2010
.
On May 1, Church Street School hosts a Community Weaving and Guitar Jam to celebrate two decades of art and music education in Tribeca. The day-long celebration will include face-painting, instrument-making, open-art classes, sample music lessons, and frenzy of fun in and around the school located at 74 Warren Street.

Festival-goers will be able to help create a large-scale art installation of woven materials to celebrate the school's recent expansion AND take part in a massive, all-players-invited, Community Guitar Jam led by Church Street School dad Mike Diamond of the Beastie Boys — potentially the world's largest guitar-jam ever led by a drummer! Andrew W.K., musician, entertainer, and creator/host of "Destroy, Build, Destroy", will MC the jam. Community Board 1 Chair Julie Menin will officially dedicate the school's new facilities, made possible by a grant from LMDC and the Department of Cultural Affairs.

On the outdoor stage at the school, afternoon performances by students, faculty and alumni will culminate in the dedication and the Community Guitar Jam. The party continues with the New Orleans sounds of The Sugartones Brass Band.

"Come ready to create, or to bask in the creativity of downtown Manhattan! Bring your own guitar, or just come and sing!" says Church Street School Director Lisa Ecklund-Flores. "We hope everyone who comes to the festival will celebrate our 20th anniversary by adding to our community weaving installation, and grabbing a guitar to play with Mike. You can also take free 15 minute instrumental lessons, or create your own art. As always, we are devoted to offering everyone the chance to unleash their artistic and musical energy here at Church Street School."

"We are thrilled that Church Street School for Music and Art has always been an important part the Family Festival, and we are totally jazzed to help them celebrate their 20th anniversary", says Peter Downing, producer of the Family Festival Street Fair, an annual tradition of the Tribeca Film Festival.
