(PR) His catchy, Caribbean-tinged first single "Oh Yeah" already churning up big waves, Jaicko has announced a winter release date for his debut album Can I. The 18-year-old pop sensation from the idyllic island nation of Barbados is ready to land with dynamic force on American shores."Oh Yeah," produced by the Stereotypes (Ne-Yo, Mary J. Blige, Natasha Bedingfield), is crisscrossing airwaves and internet portals all over the globe. It's a bouncy, carefree, irresistible anthem; the song's hook says it all: "You don't even know why you're turning up your radio/Bobbing your head in your car 'cause you feel me though/Don't be mad 'cause I've got you singing 'Oh yeah, oh yeah!'" Check also for a special version that features an intro from hip-hop legend Snoop Dogg. Find the song's video at this link: www.jaickomusic.com
Beyond "Oh Yeah," there's no ebb, no lull among the offerings on Can I. The titular track is a standout, cresting with emotion in detailing Jaicko's long and circuitous path to international notoriety. Yes he's only 18, but he began performing at age nine, and entered a recording booth a year later. Along the way, an independent album Jaicko then a rapper cut in his native Barbados sold 6,000 copies, a massive accomplishment considering the island's total population is less than that of Pittsburgh. From an insular audience apart from the rest of the world to sharing the stage with Sean Kingston on an upcoming North American tourtrue leaps and bounds.
Other songs to look for include: the boisterous, beat-heavy "Two Piece" (produced by STARGATE [Beyonce, Ne-Yo, Rihanna]); the riding reggae riddim of "Name & Number," on which Jaicko rediscovers his flow; the surging, swelling "Dreaming About Me" (produced by Jim Jonsin [Lil Wayne, Soulja Boy, TI] and Wayne Wilkens [Shontelle, Natasha Bedingfield]); and the soaring 4/4 soul-searcher "Will You Be There?" Other collaborators include longtime Usher co-writer Rico Love, Details (Ray J), Claude Kelly (Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson) and Chris Rojas (P!nk, Backstreet Boys). In all, Can I which features 3 tracks Jaicko self-produced ("Can I", "About You" and "Name and Number") is a surprisingly deep, sophisticated offering. Sure, it rides plenty of feel-good refrains and punchy percussion, but the album is gratifying, uplifting, as much varied as visceral.
Off the stage, Jaicko has kept equally busy this summer. He took time out to perform at the 2009 US Open Arthur Ashe Kids' Day and several meaningful performances at America's Camp events. America's Camp is a fun, high-quality, one-week sleepaway camp for children who lost a parent or sibling as a result of the attacks on September 11th, and for children or siblings of firefighters and law enforcement officers lost in the line of duty. From his music, to his funky, quirky fashion sense complete with halo of hair, to his pure heart and warm sensibilities, Jaicko is the new fresh face of today. And the lasting star of tomorrow.
