(antiMusic) Welcome to Singled Out! where we ask artists to tell us the inside story of their latest single. Today Stacey Quinealty from Carbon 9 tells us about "My Friend" from their brand new album "The Bull". We now turn it over to for the story:Carbon 9 is a production band that generally writes songs in the studio, but "My Friend" was one of the songs that was created by letting loose as a group in the band's rehearsal facility. As we constructed twenty eight songs for the new album, (only to allow ourselves room to cut down to the top fifteen), "My Friend" was one we just couldn't let go. In rehearsal I kept singing the words, "My friend, my friend", and I really wasn't certain what it meant. I am one of these people that believe in a purpose for everything and I contemplated the value of this lyric constantly reoccurring in my head. I was struggling with the value of a current relationship I was engaged in and it soon made sense. Living in Los Angeles and working in the entertainment industry, no different than any other industry, I soon came to the realization that the energy and aggression of this song was being driven by my personal emotions referencing this relationship. There are so many people that we encounter in our lives that actually bring value to our everyday experiences, but there are also a few that are in it for themselves. "My Friend" is about these people! The ones that call you their friend and actually make you think they care but really don't give a s**t about you.
"My Friend"is directly about that one person that constantly stabs you in the back yet we continue to keep them close within the circle. They generally do this to keep themselves feeling powerful and in complete control, while we gloat in the knowledge and wisdom that we know exactly what they are doing and therefore we are better than them. It may be a sadistic thought; to be better than another, but are all men really created equal? Some people only feel as if they are moving upwards by bringing others down and I made a personal decision not to engage in these relationships. You are the same as your environment and you must make decisions that correctly guide your life's path. The starts, stops, and dynamic changes in this track represent the ups and downs of any ongoing relationship. "My Friend," in a nutshell, is really asking the question, "Why do I feel that I need to keep this person in my private circle?" The answer is, "I don't!" There is nothing that they can bring to me in a positive manner that their negative energy will not override. There is no room in life to allow individuals to bring you down and must be avoided at all times. A real friend does not need to call you his / her close friend, for this is understood on both sides of the table. We must stand our ground and be the individual in which we were designed to be! This individual is the true self, the one that looks deep inside and lives his / her life to the fullest. As a collective society, we must avoid these negative people and come to the realization that this is their world, not mine. It is not the word, "friend" that has value, but the actions that each individual portrays on a daily basis that enhances your life. We are an evolving species, and to evolve means to move forward. It is time to let go, it is time to EVOLVE.
