Singled Out: Automatic Static

05/07/2009
.
(antiMusic) Welcome to Singled Out! where we ask artists to tell us the inside story of their latest single. Today Automatic Static vocalist/guitarist Z Rokk tells us about "Hey Now" from their brand new album "The Murder of California". We now turn it over to Z Rokk for the story:

"Hey Now" is one of those songs that uses a lot of metaphors to describe what I was feeling when I wrote the tune. I always like to keep people guessing just a little bit when I write lyrics because I think it's a fun thing to see what people interpret your music as and when you write lyrics that are too specific it ends up kind of giving it away and there is nothing left to be desired. I always loved bands like Sound Garden, Nirvana, and Helmet who use similar techniques when writing.

The song is basically about how it's too easy to be a "hater" and someone who puts down everything else that someone is doing usually with the thought of they can't do it themselves anyway. The song starts out with "Lock stock and loaded, I'm kind of feeling California, and you're looking mighty Oklahoma, so take your boots and beat it!" This basically saying that I am feeling good and you are just looking bad and therefore feeling bad and so get away from me. You may be miserable but that doesn't mean make my life sad as a result with you. The song goes on to talk about how my eyes overwhelmed me and how some times image can make you think something about something else that was never there to begin with. Looks can be deceiving so to speak.

The chorus is the main part of the song and it reads as " And I'd sell my soul to feel your passions, but I had my head in the clouds." What this meant was that I would give anything to see one thing in the person's life who I was writing about that was a "passion" or something that they would sacrafice everything for if they had the chance. A passion is something to me that you feel drawn to that no matter how little money you make from it, or how lame someone else may think it is, you would do because you feel like you were supposed to. Like it was something that makes you feel unlike anything else in the world, sometimes even better than sex. Ok, very rarely, but you get the point...ha ha. Anyway, the philosophy that Automatic Static writes music by is very simple, "KEEP IT SIMPLE" we tend to write things that make a very stripped down sound and make the music have to really rely on the kick drum, snare drum and the guitar riff. WE are a 3 piece on purpose as we want to have that raw energy and simplicity that Nirvana had and bands like T Rex, and Green Day have. It's special to us as we get off on being loud, aggressive and are able to have a hook or a catchy chorus yet not have to convelute it with a ton of other things. Layers are awesome but we want it to be the melody and the guitar riffs that catch you and the rhythm is unrelenting.

A listener will also find in the song "Hey Now" that the solo of the song or bridge of the song is instrumental. This again is a demonstration of how the songs breathe and sustain the energy without having to have vocals over it. I like to listen to a song, jam and not have to have the vocalist in my face all the time and when they come back in it is so soothing and welcomed. Nice peaks and valleys in any rock songs is really enjoyable in my opinion.
Well there ya have it. I hope to a fan or someone who cares about how the "anatomy" of an Automatic Static song is written so to speak, it will give the insight they desire. Thanks again and ROCK ON!!!
