U2 Video Interview with Yahoo

03/24/2009
.
(Yahoo Music) Today Yahoo! Music launches the first of three exclusive video interview segments with U2. Before embarking on a world tour, Bono, The Edge and Adam Clayton open up to Yahoo! Music about making their latest album, "No Line on The Horizon" and who they are as a band. The final interview segments will air on Wednesday and Friday of this week.

Despite a career spent on major record labels and their intention to make music to appeal to the masses, U2 describes themselves as an independent rock band. The dichotomy of maintaining true ownership and independence while being the biggest band in the world, is what defines U2. Says Bono, "There's a lie at the heart of the music business that people don't, that no songwriter, no artist wants to limit the possibility of their work…and we really weren't talking about being the biggest band in the world just to be obnoxious. We were just talking about the scale of the vision. Own up to it. Just, you know, it's...music, let's take it as far as we can, like the Stones, like, like The Beatles, like the Sex Pistols would if they could."

U2 points to The Beatles' "White Album" as a "blueprint" for how they make records. Much like The Beatles, U2 endeavors to be experimental and true to themselves but to also "go beyond themselves." While Bono acknowledges that some of the band's more experimental works like "Zooropa" or the Passengers Project have been "criticized for taking people down some very, some strange alleys over the years," the band feels they've hit the right note with their current project, "No Line on The Horizon." - Check it out
