(antiMusic) Welcome to Singled Out! where we ask artists to tell us the inside story of their latest single. Today Nick Mery the mastermind behind Merykid tells us about "Bad Things" from his brand new album "The Boy and the Bird," which hits stores next week. We now turn it over to Nick for the story:One day I was perusing through eBay for some unique instruments, and I stumbled upon this really old Casiotone synthesizer. I did some research, placed a bid on it, and over the next few days actually became quite invested in the idea of owning this thing, due to its staggering rarity.
Well, as most people have experienced, I was outbid by about sixty cents in the last two minutes. Defeatedly, I told myself it wasn't meant to be.
A few weeks later, I was rummaging through one of San Antonio's used instrument shops, when lo and behold, I found the exact same keyboard, for the exact same price, sitting on a pile in the back. Whether it was the same machine, or I had stumbled into some strange twilight zone-esque vortex, I bought the Casiotone, and wrote "Bad Things" that same day.
When recording it, I had only envisioned the song being an introduction to the rest of the album, no longer than a minute. However, once Jaime (the producer on my new album) had created the drum sequencing, I knew it needed to be pushed a little bit farther, resulting in one of my favorite songs on the album!
Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album - right here!
