(antiMusic) Welcome to Singled Out! where we ask artists to tell us the inside story of their latest single. Today Drive A's lead singer/guitarist Bruno Mascolo tells us about the Matt Sorum produced track "Are You Blind," from their brand new album. Here is Bruno: I almost always write the music to a song and add the lyrics later, the same with "Are You Blind." I wrote the music to "Are You Blind" about 2 weeks before we actually recorded it for the album. One day I picked up my guitar and that beginning riff was the first thing I played when I turned on my amp. Not sure where it came from, but I thought it was pretty rad so I kept messing with it and always came back to the original approach. Believe it or not, everything in this song just came easy - once I had the intro and tagged it, the song took off from there. A lot of times the songs are put together in pieces, write a part here add a riff there or whatever. With "Are You Blind," I wrote it all at once in one sitting from beginning to end and I really think it set the tone for the whole record. That was one of two songs produced by Matt Sorum on the record and he got really good guitar tones. The drums really help to push the song as well. I wrote "Are You Blind" right after coming off tour so the song is just a burst of energy and is great to play live. It is usually our last song and is great for crowd participation. We usually extend a few of the parts, especially the "Going Down, going down" part with the tom-snare beat underneath. It tends to work and is a great way to end the set.
As far as the lyrics and title are concerned, its basically about getting your s*** together and moving forward: Are You Blind? / Can You See What's Right In Front Of Me?
There is a goal, a bigger picture. Figure it out, you know?
The songs on our album are about being frustrated and the lyrics are personal, but everyone listening can relate to them in their own way. I think that is what sets us apart from a lot of the bands out there right now. We are experiencing the exact same things as our fans and that is generally what our songs are about.
Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album - right here!
