A Who's Who of Rock Rocks For Deftones' Chi Cheng
12/21/2009
.
On November 19 and 20, 2009 hard rock pioneers Deftones hosted two special benefit shows at the intimate Avalon in Hollywood, CA for their bassist, Chi Cheng. Joined by a handful of their peers from near and far, both shows featured entirely unique sets with Deftones performing songs from all five of their prior releases as well as some fan favorite covers. The aim was to raise funds for the ongoing care of Cheng who has been in a semi-conscious state since Nov, 2008 due to severe head injuries sustained in an auto accident. Unannounced guests such as Robert Trujillo (Metallica), Mike Shinoda (Linkin Park), Slayers Dave Lombardo, Daron Malakian, John Dolmayan, Shavo Odajian (System of A Down), Cypress Hill,, Max Cavalera (Sepultura), Xzibit, Alexi Laiho (Children of Bodom), Mark McGrath (Sugar Ray), Ben Kenney (Incubus), Greg Puciato (Dillinger Escape Plan), Johan Matranga, Chris Robyn, Shaun Lopez (Far) and more showed up in support of their good friend in time of need. The resultant, emotionally-charged shows raised funds and activated fans to unite in their heartfelt contribution toward an important cause. Additionally, over 60 artists and organizations stepped up to donate collectable items for an online auction. Key contributors included: Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, My Chemical Romance, System of a Down, Alice In Chains, Avenged Sevenfold, HIM, Rise Against, Blink 182, Live Nation and Goldenvoice. The combined efforts allowed Deftones to raise close to 100K. The fact remains that Chi still needs our help as medical expenses continue to mount while he remains incapacitated.
