Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds has been nominated for a 2010 Grammy Award for "Best Compilation Soundtrack Album For A Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media," it was announced on Wednesday. The album, which was released by Warner Bros. Records on August 18th, is the original soundtrack to Tarantino's acclaimed WWII-themed film Inglourious Basterds, starring Brad Pitt.
The soundtrack, which is currently available for purchase from all digital retailers, includes music by famed composer Ennio Morricone, deep cuts from David Bowie, Billy Preston, and others, as well as relatively obscure pieces from such artists as Lilian Harvey & Willy Fritsch. Each song was carefully hand-picked by Tarantino to amplify the scenes in the film. As he told the New York Times, "I'm looking for stuff that you haven't heard a gazillion times before."
The Inglourious Basterds DVD will be released on December 15th. The film, which has been selected as one of the National Board of Review's ten best films of 2009, was screened at the Cannes Film Festival, where Christoph Waltz took home the Best Actor prize. It is set in the first year of the German occupation of France. Shosanna Dreyfus (Melanie Laurent) witnesses the execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa (Waltz) and narrowly escapes and flees to Paris where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema.
The Grammy Awards will be handed out at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on January 31st, 2010. Tune in to the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards telecast, which airs that night on CBS at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
