CMJ 2009 Announced

08/12/2009
.
(PR) Following up one of its most successful years ever, CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival returns to New York City October 20th-24th. As New York’s largest music event and one of the world’s most important showcases of new music artists, CMJ draws tens of thousands of professionals from all sectors of the music and film industry.

More than 1,300 artists and over 120,000 music fans will converge on the Big Apple to catch the latest buzz band, cool indie film or learn more about the ever-changing music industry from key innovators, insiders and celebrities.

By day, in partnership with New York University, , CMJ Music Marathon welcomes many of the world’s most influential and revolutionary musicians, artists, cultural and political figures at a variety of events including presentations, screenings, Q&A sessions and panel discussions.

At night, CMJ Music Marathon takes over 75 venues across Manhattan, Brooklyn and surrounding environs presenting a dazzling array of new music from around the globe. Registration to CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival grants attendees entry to all daytime and nighttime offerings (venue capacity permitting). New York’s 101.9 WRXP will return as the official commercial radio sponsor of this year’s event.

CMJ’s daytime events will be home based at NYU’s Kimmel Center in downtown Manhattan’s Greenwich Village and include panels, keynote speeches, networking events, the annual College Day gathering, mentoring sessions, tutorials, and a sizzling, interactive registrants’ lounge lifestyle area along with the return of the Artists’ Lounge for musicians. The event will also host its annual CMJ continuing legal education seminar, The Entertainment Business Law Seminar, presented by CMJ Music Marathon and The Entertainment, Arts and Sports Law Section of the New York State Bar Association.

Panels confirmed so far for this year’s annual CMJ Music Marathon include the music panels: Small Efficient Record Label - Big Results, Exactly Why Did The Major Label System Fail? Or Did It?, Creating Music With The Newest Technology, A View Of The Music Industry From A Minor's Perspective, "I'm In Between Gigs,” A Music Industry Job Think Thank, The Real Meaning Of D.I.Y. And Quitting Your Day Job and A Full-On Major (Label, Publishing, Management, Licensing) Pitch Session. Film Festival panels include: Déjà Vu All Over Again: What the Film Business Can Learn from the Music Business in the New Economy, Crossing the Line: Actors Who Sing, Singers Who Act and Breaking Into Film Scoring.

CMJ has always been a springboard for the best new music talent from multiple music genres, discovering music’s future superstars years before their commercial breakthroughs. Past marquee artists include Crystal Castles (’08), MGMT (’07), the Shins (’06), Feist (’05), the Arcade Fire (’04), the Killers (’03), Modest Mouse (’98), Eminem (’98), Black Eyed Peas (’97), Wilco (’96), Green Day (’94), Queen Latifah (’90), the Beastie Boys (’85), U2 (’85), Red Hot Chili Peppers (’84), and R.E.M. (’83). And that’s just for starters.

The 2009 event will continue that tradition, with CMJ Music Marathon highlighting the best new music first, featuring performances from artists that span genres including alternative, rock, electronic, hip-hop, metal, Americana, world, jazz and so much more. It’s virtually assured that 2010’s superstar artists will be playing the CMJ Music Marathon in 2009. The first round of performing bands is scheduled to be announced before the end of August.
