(antiMusic) Welcome to Singled Out! where we ask artists to tell us the inside story of their latest single. Today Ashbury frontman Brian Leetells us about "Let's Make A Scene" the title track from their brand new release. We now turn it over to Brian for the story:After we started to really get serious about recording the new record, I kind of felt like the record really wasn't finished yet. There was still some space for some upbeat, more light-hearted songs, and I was adamant about filling that gap. My life can get crazy sometimes, and I often compare it to a movie or TV show. So many things have happened purely by coincidence that seem too crazy to be true.
The line from our single "Let's Make A Scene" that says, "I think we're caught in the middle of a movie scene and real life..." had been repeating in my head for quite a while and I was just looking for a song to put it into. I think alot of the record in general ended up being based on observations about other people and how they deal with life in comparison with myself.
I tried to look at a lot of the coping mechanisms people used to get through hard times. Part of what I came up with was this idea that people rehearse their conflicts internally before even approaching them. Coupling that with the idea that my life seemed like a movie sometimes just seemed cool. I think everyone kind of feels like they've been set up, or something bad is happening to them for a reason. I finally just learned how to deal with it by saying "Bring it on!"
I really believed in the song when it was first written. I thought it was going to be one of the most fun to listen to on the record, but honestly it took some convincing. The other guys didn't hate the song, but I think after hearing it only acoustically, they definitely weren't believers. I think Joey [lead guitar] was really the hardest one on that song. But eventually we demoed it out and let Joey take the reigns and add the bells and whistles.
After we heard it at its full potential I think even I was surprised. Recording it with our producer Lou took it to the next level, and I think I can speak for all of us when I say it's one of our favorite songs on the new record. That's why we named the EP, "Let's Make a Scene."
Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
