Steve Wynn Week: Day 1

(antiMusic) There is very little new we can say by way of introduction for Steve Wynn. He's been an applauded fixture on the music scene since the early 80s when he was part of Dream Syndicate. When that band ended, Steve continued his musical vision with other projects like Miracle 3 and Gutterball and produced an amazing catalog of releases. As an artist Steve in many ways is his generation's answer to artists like Bob Dylan and David Bowie, in not only style but also with his diversity. Steve just released his new album 'Crossing Dragon Bridge' a couple weeks ago and this week we are honored to have Steve tell us a little bit about a few of his favorite songs from the album. Here he is with today's song: Love Me Anyway: Chris Eckman and I had been working on the music and melody for this song but I was absolutely stuck on the lyrics. The worst thing that can happen when writing a song is that you have "place-setting" lyrics that you don't like. You've been singing them, hearing their rhythm but you also know that they're not the ones you'll use (that story about Paul McCartney's 'Scrambled Eggs' becoming 'Yesterday' comes to mind). Anyway, time was running out during our session in Ljubljana and I knew that I wanted to record the song but just didn't know what to say. And then one night before I returned to my hotel Chris lent me a DVD of "The Piano Teacher," a very disturbing movie by German director Michael Haneke. I was mesmerized, shocked, blown away and distracted just enough where the words to this song just quickly poured out of me. Sometimes you just have to climb outside of yourself for a little while to get where you're going. If you haven't already picked up this CD then do yourself a favor and grab a listen to a few of the songs off of this CD and learn more about Steve Wynn - right here!
