Quicks: Madonna Vs Mariah, Def Leppard, Tina Turner Retires From Retirement, Phil Spector Can Sue Shapiro, and Bye Bye Net Music?

05/01/2008
.
(antiMusic) Here is a quick look at some stories online about Mariah Carey, Madonna, Def Leppard, Tina Turner, Phil Spector, and the latest blow to Net Music. We start off with this story from FMQB about Mariah Carey: For the second week in a row, Mariah Carey's E=MC2 is the best selling album in the country. It sold another 181,889 copies, according to SoundScan more

Mariah better enjoy it while it lasts because her reign is about to end according to this report from Billboard: Madonna is on track to net her seventh No. 1 album on next week's Billboard 200 with "Hard Candy," based on first-day sales measured by the Nielsen SoundScan Building Chart released Wednesday afternoon (April 30). more

While it's not Mariah or Madonna numbers Def Leppard still have the ability to hit the Top 10 according to this Blabbermouth report: According to Hits Daily Double (the companion web site of music industry tip sheet HITS), DEF LEPPARD's new album, "Songs from the Sparkle Lounge", is poised to sell between 45,000 and 50,000 copies in the United States during its first week of release for a possible Top 10 debut. more

Jam was full of interesting stories today. Here are two summaries with the links: Tina Turner says she's hitting the road again for her first tour in the United States in seven years. The 68-year-old singer announced on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" that it will begin Oct. 1 in Kansas City. more

Phil Spector's on-again, off-again breach-of-contract lawsuit against his former lawyer Robert Shapiro appears to be back on after a judge ruled Wednesday the lawsuit can go forward. more

Finally Reuters had this one, which might spell the end of a handy promotional tool the labels had to turn people on to new music by offering previews of music at various websites. ASCAP just wants to get paid. Of course, if the online companies stop previewing the music, ASCAP members won't earn royalties on the extra sales generated by the previews. Great lose lose! Here is the AP story: Time Warner Inc's AOL unit, RealNetworks and Yahoo Inc could stand to pay up to $100 million in royalties owed to thousands of songwriters and publishers, after a federal judge established a formula for determining the payments. - more
